Star architect Chipperfield: a laboratory building for the Novartis Campus
2010 Grand DAI Prize for Building Culture for his life’s work
Views inside: a laboratory building designed for new research concepts
11th volume in the series
Laboratory buildings are usually technoid-industrial in character and rarely have an aesthetic aspect of high rank. Except on the Novartis Campus in Basel. Here British architect Chipperfield has designed a laboratory building with an open spatial structure, which takes into account the latest concepts in laboratory technology and interdisciplinary collaboration and is aesthetically impressive in appearance.
In 1984 Chipperfield set up the David Chipperfield Architects office, with studios in London, Berlin, Milan and Shanghai. In 2009 he won the competition for the extension of the Kunsthaus on Helmplatz in Zurich, and recently his major achievement in the field of monument protection, the Neue Museum in Berlin, was reopened. In 2010 he was awarded the Grand DAI Prize for Building Culture for his life's work.
Texts by art historian Jacqueline Burckhardt, editor of the magazine Parkett, and by Paolo Fumagalli; introduction by Ulrike Jehle-Schulte Strathaus, photographs by Paolo Rosselli.
(Karl J. Habermann, db, September 2011)
